Deep Tech & Fresh Perspectives: A Conversation with Sam Deanz

At 989 Records, we’ve always believed that electronic music is more than just a beat for the dancefloor—it’s a sonic journey. Our latest release from Sam Deanz is a perfect example of that philosophy.

Moving between the atmospheric textures of [Genre, e.g., Organic House] and the driving precision that defines the 989 sound, [Artist Name] is quickly becoming a name to watch. We sat down to talk about the inspiration behind their new track, Flow the gear they can’t live without in the studio, and what it’s like joining the 989 family.

✅ The Early Years: Roots & Development
Where did you grow up, and how did your surroundings influence your connection to music?

I grew up in Cheshire, UK. While it wasn’t a major music hub, unlike the cities surrounding me, it provided me with a grounded and stable environment to develop my early interests. Music initially started as something personal to me and something I connected with emotionally, before understanding it technically.

I moved to Malta when I was 13; the move made a stronger impact on my direction as an aspiring producer. Being exposed to different sounds, DJ venues, and eventually the club scene when I was older allowed me to feel like I was part of a community and made music feel less distant and more achievable.

Reflecting on your first projects, what’s something you would approach differently now?

Looking back on some of my first projects, I can recognise flaws, but also their importance. I was mainly focused on finishing tracks, rather than refining them. My knowledge was still developing, and I was creating instinctively, without the technical foundation I’ve built since.

If I were to go back to these projects, I would spend more time refining sound design and mixing decisions, ensuring clarity and balance rather than rushing to complete a project.

On the other hand, there is nothing I regret as they represent my growth and experimentation.

If you could advise your younger self at the start of your journey, what would it be?

If I could advise my younger self at the start of my journey, I would tell myself to remain consistent, take the highs with the inevitable lows, and to stay significant in regards to new ideas and knowledge.

I would also tell myself that progress in music production is not linear and there will be periods of rapid growth and moments that feel have come to a stop. However, I believe both of these feelings are necessary.

Most importantly, I would tell myself to trust the process. The small improvement and failed attempts all contribute to the bigger picture, and this is where I find myself today.

✅ Career & Personal Evolution

Why is it important for artists to share their struggles as openly as their successes?

Artists need to share their struggles as openly as their successes, as it creates connection and credibility. Sharing setbacks can only humanise music producers as audiences connect to the imperfect and real.

Today’s audiences are smart and can identify when something is ‘’too perfect’’. When artists are transparent and open about the good and bad, it creates authenticity and builds loyalty.

I believe vulnerability makes the artist’s brand stronger.

✅Industry Realities & Perseverance

Why is persistence such a crucial part of succeeding in the music industry?

Persistence plays an important role in success in the music industry, as it rarely happens quickly or predictably. The industry is highly competitive, saturated, and constantly evolving, so I believe the talent alone is just the starting point. Long-term consistency provides long-term results and separates those who give up early.

Growth in this industry is gradual and is not without its setbacks. Each project builds on the last and allows the artist to accumulate experience, improve technically, and gain confidence within the artist themselves, and also on a personal level
